How to ….?

As I already mentioned, this month I will be sharing ‘How to…?’ posts

This is the first, and the rest will be sent out every Friday this month, so remember to check back.

With so many convenience foods around, it is so easy to just pop into a supermarket and pick up tinned (canned), bottled or pre-packaged food. However, since these products are mass produced, often we are not sure whether the ingredients and added preservatives are safely gluten-free, or even good for our health – scary when you don’t know exactly what goes into your meals.

Therefore, over the years, I’ve had to learn to be inventive, creative, and make most of my own sauces, dressings, and other delicious conveniences.

How to…?

Make your own Tomato Sauce

This sauce is delicious when used:

  • in pasta
  • on pizza
  • as a dip
  • added to other dishes

Tomato Sauce

ingredients tomato sauce

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, skinned and chopped
  • 1 sweet bell pepper (any colour), chopped
  • 1 red onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of spice (I used a chili mix)
  • Juice from half a lemon

  1. Place the tomatoes into a deep dish
  2. Pour boiled water over and let stand
  3. Wash the bell pepper and chop
  4. Peel and chop the onion and garlic
  5. When the water in the bowl of tomatoes is cool, and the tomato skin split, drain and peel the tomoatoes
  6. Chop roughly
  7. Place all the ingredients – tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, garlic, salt, spice, and lemon juice into a blender
  8. Pulse until a smooth and thick sauce/paste is formed
  9. Remove from the blender and pour into a container
  10. Use immediately, or freeze
