Did you also grow up learning about the food pyramid, and which foods were considered to be the healthiest in a western diet? Did wheat form a huge portion of the list? For me, it did. That was considered ‘normal’. Eating wheat based bread, pizza, pasta, wholegrain cereals, and of course, cookies and biscuits.
Little did I know that this would prove to be my nemesis.
When following a gluten-free lifestyle, of course, wheat is one of the first ingredients to be excluded. There are however, healthy grains that are very nutritious, and essential on a gluten-free diet. Reaching for bread or cereals first though, is not really any different to eating ‘the old way’. To have a balanced lifestyle, vegetables are extremely important, as are fruit, legumes, nuts and fats. These combined, correctly, are what we should be consuming, on a daily basis to maintain good health, and prevent diseases.
For the first time in 15 years, Nutrition Australia has revised the food pyramid, and this is what it looks like now.
